baLens Question: Hotshoe flash + lights

April 17, 2009

Q: When using the baLens and a hotshoe-mounted flash under bright stadium lights (for example), how should someone calibrate the white balance?

A: That may be an example where you may have to go with the camera’s Program mode for white balance, rather than custom.

The color temp of sodium vapor is usually around 2700 kelvin and flash units vary from ~5600-6000 kelvin.  At closer ranges, perhaps a preset custom setting using the baLens (stored in the camera).  You would need to set it using flash, either bounced off a neutral wall or mirror back into the baLens mounted lens.  You may also try taking a shot with the flash firing at the artificial light source with the baLens mounted on the lens as well, but results may vary.
